The Melting Pot

It is weird that we talk about the melting pot almost every day in class, and just yesterday this random kid started a chat with me on Skype because thought I was from Athens, Greece, where he happens to be from. When I told him that I was from Athens, Ohio in the United States, he flipped and started going off on Americans. He was saying that our country had no history and that we were a bunch of random people mixed together. He said that the Greeks are better than Americans because not only did they invent the alphabet and certain mathematics, but only Greeks lived in Greece, but we have blacks, and asians, and indians, and hispanics, etc living here. I told him that, that was exactly what made us America!

We are different than all the other countries out there for that exact reason. We are the land of the free! We are the land of opportunity! So why complain that the immigrants are supposedly taking our jobs? America wouldn’t be what it is today without immigrants. At one point there were only “illegal” immigrants living in this country. Now I understand that it would be chaos without the process immigrants have to go through, but do we need to be so harsh? That is one question I think will never be answered.

Below I am showing a clip of Miss Universe. Me and my mom watch this every year together because we are so fascinated by the fact that every women looks like the country they are from. For example, Miss Japan looks Japanese and Miss Venezuela looks hispanic. However when you look at the group as a hole they could all be from America and no one would question it because there is no such thing as an “American look.” Miss USA could look hispanic or oriental or black, and no one would think anything of it because after all, this is America, and we are the Melting Pot.

After reading Erin’s post, I thought about it, and also realized that there are so many different looks in America. Basically anyone could look American. If you were to go to a mall and check out all of the stores, you find many diferrent styles of clothing stores that reflect many different ethnicities. Alot of Hispanics wear Ecko and South Pole. These cloths looks similar to what you would find in their native country, except not designer brands.

Erin brings up a good point about immigrants and the process to become a legal U.S. citizen, but I disagree with that statement. I believe the system is supposed to be hard because I don’t want it easy for someone who is a terrorist to get in to America. Because we are so popular with the Islamic people of the Middle East, we need the process to protect us and ensure our well being.
